Impress

He wants to do better than he’s been allowed to, so it comes down to asking a linguist (a lawyer in disguise, really) to be his matchmaker. He’s sure he can do better than the rich man’s son, or the middle man’s boy, because he’s the one who knows how to economise.

So he waits in the warmth of the stove, and puts on his Sunday best – which is all that nature has given him – and gets married well enough to impress his father-in-law.
