What does it mean to lose everything? She thought she knew before, when her husband and all her sons passed away one after another. Before, she’d thought losing everything was simply a myth, because everyone is born bringing nothing and die without being able to take anything away. Before, she’d thought that ultimately, there was nothing to lose.
She can see now that she’s been wrong this whole time, because she hadn’t thought to count the numerous gifts that would be given to her in this life – gifts that didn’t belong to her, but gifts she thought she could keep; to have and hold by her side until she’s ready to let go.
Nothing’s ever that easy. So she kisses everything and more goodbye until she’s down to a negative amount, and wonders when she’ll be able to let go of enough so she’s feeling light enough to walk again.
