In the Stillness

It’s harder to be awake than asleep, because from the moment his eyes open with the spilling of morning light, he feels like he’s being tested; poked and prodded with sticks and stones until even the words from the depths of his heart find their way out.

He’s long stopped moving from his spot within the apple of another’s eyesight (unless the line of sight moves, of course), but still manages to make enemies who prowl around him, waiting for him to make a mistake. They surround him as he hides in plain sight and takes the test only he can feel, because in spite of everything, this isn’t a battle that belongs to him.

When the shadows are swallowed by shadows, he is finally emptied, and vindicated from the rewards of this life.
