The Stakes

He sits on his stool at his workbench, whittling away at a stick.

To be sure, it’s a piece of strange evidence, but it’s proof nonetheless that they’re expanding; getting ready to enlarge the size of their homes.

And because cut wood doesn’t grow, he remakes all their tent pegs – proof that even though they haven’t reached their permanent home yet, unlike wood, they can and will continue to grow without concern.

He works without pause, and in the fading sun, the sweat on his skin glistens like strings of precious stones.
