A Moment Before Dawn

He’s anxious and nervous from waiting for news about his friend, but while he waits, he stands by the bonfire in the courtyard, warming his hands until even the shadows could tell where he’s been.

The servant girls and other staff on break take a look at the fading shadows, and to one of the girls, he’s been revealed – most likely betrayed by his actions and the expression on his face.

He tried to deny it, but she persists – insists, in the only way a woman can.

Finally, when even his blood-features betray him, he turns to deny them, and finds that his heart has just betrayed his dearest friend and made a traitor out of him.

A rooster crows, and a man cries.
