If you are observant, or nit-picky, or both, you might have noticed that I use British spelling as opposed to American spelling. While I’ve spent enough time in the States to be able to write in American English, I prefer sticking to my roots, at least for personal usage.
Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against American English – in fact, I think it makes the English language all the more unique and diverse (and sometimes annoying, but that’s another story). But I was taught to use British English, and to not use it makes me feel as if I would lose a part of my history. Sometimes I catch myself dropping ‘U’s or changing the ‘S’ for a ‘Z’, and when that happens, some inexplicable dread fills me from head to toe. So if I don’t have to use American English, I won’t. But I always strive for consistency, so if I start in one style, I’ll definitely stick to that style. I believe that English has enough exceptions without having to add our own, but needless to say, I’ll always love using this language, no matter how illogical it may be.
Happy writing, my fellow English users, whether you be British or American, or somewhere in between.
